NGI Open Calls

Through an agile and flexible process, following the Horizon 2020 cascade funding mechanism, ongoing NGI Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) provide support to projects from outstanding academic researchers, hi-tech startups and SMEs.

Funding is allocated to projects using short research cycles targeting the most promising ideas. Each of the selected projects pursue their own objectives, while the NGI RIAs provide the programme logic and vision, technical support, coaching and mentoring, to ensure that projects contribute towards a significant advancement of research and innovation in the NGI initiative.

The focus is on advanced concepts and technologies that link to relevant use cases and that can have an impact on the market and society over all. Applications and services that innovate without a research component are not covered by this model.

NGI ASSURE

NGI ASSURE 13th Open Call

Trust is the basis for social value and self-organisation, but technical assurances are what help make it trustworthy.

Opening date: 1st December 2022

Closing date: 15th February 2023, 12:00 PM CEST (Brussels time)

Short description: NGI Assure is looking for building blocks that contribute to providing such assurances include (but are not limited to) quantum-proof cryptography, public key infrastructure, (augmented) authenticated key exchange, ratchet mechanisms (such as the Noise protocol) that securely chain key material, distributed hash tables and DAGs to make P2P interaction more secure, conflict-free replicated data types, mixnets and onion routing mechanisms, consensus protocols, distributed ledgers and (post) blockchain technologies that create redundant data sets managed independently by mutually distrustful parties, a priori usage control, symbolic and formal proofs, and tamperproof open hardware implementations of core cryptographic primitives. The work needs to become available under free and open source licenses.
We are looking for deep tech components; the outcomes of NGI Assure shall contribute towards identifying and solving current issues, but do not need to provide a complete solution by themselves. NGI Assure enables collaboration among humans without unjustified trust.
We need your contributions to help reshape the state of play, and to help create an open, trustworthy and reliable internet for all. And of course such contributions do not happen automatically. This is why we will award 5.6 million Euro in small to medium-size R&D grants towards R&D efforts and free and open source projects that can deliver the above. We are looking for new ideas and core technologies that help society tackle hard but very very important questions, each of which has significant social and economic consequences.
We are seeking project proposals between 5 000 and 50 000 Euro – with the potential to scale them up if there is proven potential. Instead of just handing over problems we would like to put powerful new solutions in the hands of future generations, as building blocks for a fair and democratic society and an open economy that benefits all. Today we create the internet of tomorrow, with ideas that even yesterday might have seemed impossible to many. Don’t be afraid to send something completely out of the box if you think you can contribute to this topic.

Target participants: Anyone that can bring a relevant contribution to the topics of NGI Assure can apply, whether you are a natural person or an organisation of any type that wants to improve and further develop Distributed Ledger Technologies, advanced blockchain technologies and related enabling technologies. You can remain anonymous during the evaluation, if you so desire.

NGI Zero Entrust

NGI ZERO ENTRUST 4th Open Call
Trustworthiness and data sovereignty

Opening date: 1st December 2022

Closing date: 1st February 2023, 12:00 PM CEST (Brussels time)

Short description: We need a more resilient, trustworthy and open internet, empowering the end-users. Trust is only justified and sustainable if it the technology in question is up for the job, and is secure-by-design as well as trustworthy. Much of the software, services and devices does not measure up, and it is quite unlikely this will just improve by itself. NGI0 Entrust is designed to move beyond the status quo and create a virtuous cycle of innovation through free and open source softwarelibre hardware and open standards. If we want everyone to use and benefit from the internet to its full potential without holding back, the internet must be built on strong and transparent technologies that allow for permissionless innovation and are equally accessible to all.

Target participants: Independent researchers and developers to create powerful new technologies, and to help them put it in the hands of future generations as building blocks for a fair and democratic society and a sustainable and open economy that benefits all.
